Making Dread History
View through CrossRef
This chapter traces the intellectual influences and personal experiences that shaped Robert A. Hill’s approach to historical scholarship, what he calls dread history. Hill developed an intellectual praxis that was rooted in the revolutionary dialectics of his mentor C.L.R. James, that grew organically out of his activism in Canada, Jamaica, and the United States, and that blurred the lines between the work of the archivist, the editor, and the author. The result was an intellectual legacy that remains underappreciated, and which has done much to shape our understanding of twentieth-century pan-African movements.
