Unpublished sound recordings of Indian songs, collected by Father Martin Gusinde, in Tierra del Fuego. Gusinde was the most important researcher in Tierra del Fuego, able to present a complete documentation on the most southern inhabitants of the earth. Born in Breslau and after studying in Vienna, he was sent as a teacher to Chile (Santiago). From then on, he was able to carry out four expeditions to Tierra del Fuego (1919-1924). During each of his long stays, he met the three main ethnic groups: “the Selk' nam (Ona), the hunting people; the Yamana (Yahgan), the water nomads of the Cape Horn; and the Halakwulup (Alakaluf, Kawéskar), water nomads in the West of Patagonia” (Gusinde). This results in remarkable work in its level of completion, important photo material, and extremely valuable sound documents.
Gusinde’s cylinder recordings come from his fourth and last trip to Tierra del Fuego in 1923. There are 30 sound documents known: 7 of the Selk' nam, 9 of the Halakwulup and 14 of the Yamana.
The sound and photographic documents of Gusinde, as well as his amazing literary work, are invaluable to testify to this culture that disappeared in the 20th century. (See Booklet Music! The Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv 1900-2000)
