View through CrossRef
This study is to introduce the current condition and characteristics of ‘the remains of Songnim-ri earthenware Kilns’ recently excavated and to present the known places of earthenware Kilns in Goryeong region in order to examine the distribution of Daegaya earthenware Kilns over Goryeong region.
‘The remains of Songnim-ri earthenware Kilns’ were built to produce earthenware, and they are of great significance in that they are new materials related to the production and supply of Daegaya earthenware. Such relics as earthenware and bricks were excavated from this place of Kilns. First of all, the sort of earthenware includes almost all types excavated from Daegaya old mounds including that of Jisandong. This earthenware was not used in daily life but buried in tombs, which indicates the objective of operating earthenware Kilns in time. In addition, the excavation of bricks made it possible to assume the existence of brick Kilns in the 5th to 6th centuries, which is also of significance. In view of the characteristics of remains excavated so far, it is thought that Songnim-ri earthenware Kilns were operated since long before and after the late 5th century. It is reported that in Goryeong region, earthenware Kiln places were found in Naegok-ri, Goryeong-eup, Hapga 1·2-ri, Ssangnim-myeon, etc. Most of the remains including Songnim-ri are located around the water system of Anrimcheon(安林川). It is of high possibility, therefore, that in the future, more remains for earthenware production, etc will be found around this area.
A lot of efforts have been put forth into the study on Daegaya history so far to complement insufficient documental data, accommodate existing achievements in the area of archeology, and make a breakthrough to advance further. The excavation of the Songnim-ri earthenware Kilns contributed to drawing interests into the actual condition of producing relics in Daegaya remains. In the future, it is expected that this will become a major turning point in the study on Daegaya earthenware and the restoration of Daegaya history.
