Durant l’entre-deux-guerres, deux universitaires strasbourgeois ont publié une biographie de Martin Luther : l’historien Lucien Febvre, auteur de Un destin : Martin Luther (1928), et le théologien Henri Strohl, avec son Luther. Esquisse de sa vie et de sa pensée (1933). L’un et l’autre insistent sur le fait que Luther fut un être humain profondément religieux, et ils combattent en conséquence le Luther dévastateur de Heinrich Denifle. Toutefois, on trouve chez le premier plusieurs mentions du caractère allemand de Luther.
