Empire as Interaction

Abstract
A sense of empire as a process of exchange can be gained even from documents which at first sight express the full weight of royal power, such as Zeuxis’ letter to Amyzon, written immediately after taking the city over.1 The particular case of Amyzon is framed in the wider context of ‘all those who have trusted and handed themselves over to us’, in the rhetoric of extension and totality essential to representations of imperial power; Zeuxis’ professed solicitude speaks of the asymmetry between the royal state and the local community; the letter ends by notifying the Amyzonians that Zeuxis has ordered his subordinates to take care of them and refrain from abuses. The structures of control are already in place; local status quo depends on the performative utterance of the imperial state.

Abstract
A sense of empire as a process of exchange can be gained even from documents which at first sight express the full weight of royal power, such as Zeuxis’ letter to Amyzon, written immediately after taking the city over.
1 The particular case of Amyzon is framed in the wider context of ‘all those who have trusted and handed themselves over to us’, in the rhetoric of extension and totality essential to representations of imperial power; Zeuxis’ professed solicitude speaks of the asymmetry between the royal state and the local community; the letter ends by notifying the Amyzonians that Zeuxis has ordered his subordinates to take care of them and refrain from abuses.
The structures of control are already in place; local status quo depends on the performative utterance of the imperial state.
