“The Life of a Wit is a warfare upon earth”

Putting Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy into proximity with James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist suggests that both writers see their respective writers, Tristram and Stephen emerging from worlds intent on promulgating its own opinions, whether by argument or warfare, whether opinions about nonsensical subjects or about the deepest religious and political thoughts of our society. Where Tristram quite readily enters into this world of his father and his uncle, Stephen resists, although in both instances a sequel is needed to release the real artist, which is why Yorick (i.e., Sterne) and not Tristram represents the true intentions of Sterne’s career as an artist; and why Stephen must accompany Bloom in order to deal with his own inheritance, the enduring legacy, despite himself, of his Christian and Irish environment.
