Op 4 juli 2026 is het tweehonderdvijftig jaar geleden dat dertien Amerikaanse koloniën de Declaration of Independence goedkeurden. Daarin verklaarden deze koloniën zichzelf onafhankelijk van het moederland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Dat gebeurde in het zogenoemde tweede Continentale Congres. Een van de belangrijkste schrijvers van de voornoemde Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring was de latere president Thomas Jefferson.
