A Statistical Comparative Study of the Basilar Impression in Syringomyelia
View through CrossRef
The attempt is made to show statistically how frequently basilar impression occurs in syringomyelia. The results indicate that one third of 81 cases of syringomyelia undoubtedly had a basilar impression. Independently of sex, age of onset, presence of spasticity or width of the cervical spinal canal, the odontoid tip was higher in syringomyelia patients than in the control group of 198 healthy persons. The major symptoms as well as the course of the illness were very similar in patients with and without basilar impression, although nystagmus and occipital pain were more prevalent in cases with basilar impressions.
