"Natura" verso il 1954. Intorno a Gli ultimi naturalisti di Francesco Arcangeli

View through CrossRef
At the end of 1954, the art critic Francesco Arcangeli published the essay Gli ultimi naturalisti in the journal “Paragone”. With this essay, Arcangeli sought to bring together the work of a group of painters (Vasco Bendini, Pompilio Mandelli, Mattia Moreni, Ennio Morlotti, Sergio Vacchi) engaged in a renewed exploration of nature, a subject that was now completely detached from the traditional genre of landscape painting. Instead, nature was approached through a non-figurative style, characterized by violent brushstrokes and dense accumulations of paint. This article aims to provide an overview of the meanings and resonances that the word “nature” evoked around 1954, examining its implications not only in the context of art criticism but also in relation to contemporary philosophy, literature, and scientific discourse. By situating Arcangeli’s essay within this broader cultural framework, the study highlights how “nature” functioned as a key conceptual node, reflecting the complexities of the mid-20th-century intellectual landscape.
