(042) SEXUAL EMERGENCIES

View through CrossRef
Abstract Introduction Sexual emergencies, arising from both coital and autoerotic activities, are often under-recognized in healthcare but can present substantial medical challenges. This review seeks to outline the range of sexual emergencies, emphasizing regional variations to inform better management strategies and enhance patient outcomes. Objective To categorize and analyze common sexual emergencies based on cases observed in our ER and a comprehensive literature review, aiming to improve recognition and treatment approaches across multiple medical specialties. Methods Drawing on case data from Hialeah Hospital in Miami, Florida, alongside an extensive literature review, we analyzed sexual emergencies across neurology, urology, cardiology, gynecology, obstetrics, immunology, and gastroenterology. Case reports and studies were reviewed to classify these emergencies. Results Common coital emergencies identified include neurological conditions (e.g., benign coital headache, subarachnoid hemorrhage), urological emergencies (e.g., penile fracture), and cardiac events (e.g., sudden cardiac death). Autoerotic emergencies often involve foreign object insertions in the gastrointestinal tract and other cavities. Additionally, cases of sexual assault, hyperactive arousal disorders, and jealousy-related violence were noted. Observed regional differences in these cases underscore the need for localized treatment strategies. Conclusions Sexual emergencies are more common than anticipated, encompassing a wide range of urgent medical issues. Increased awareness and specialized training for managing these conditions could improve patient outcomes and survival rates. Continued research is essential to create region-specific protocols, enhancing care for patients with sexual emergencies. Disclosure No.
