Black Europe

View through CrossRef
In her introduction to part II, “Black Europe,” Gail Lewis stresses how Black Europe is an oxymoronic space, given the actual presence of millions of Black people in Europe and the simultaneous conceptual expulsion of Black people in Europe. This ontological issue begs several questions, such as how to engage with this tension and whether Europe can be an enabling space. The richness of Gloria Wekker’s work shows enduring commitment to this topic, which she deepens with important ethnographic work, thus showing that notions of Blackness “are (always) themselves geographically, generationally, demographically and temporally situated and open to change.”
