View through CrossRef
The contribution proposes the provisional results of an investigation about the vulgarization and the manuscript tradition of Angelo Clareno's major work (variously entitled by the publishers: Historia septem tribulationum or Liber chronicarum ). Starting f rom the identification of an unknown witness served in Porto, the authors have taken up the philological and historical cultural problems of the entire dossier, starting from the observation that the current critical editions are still provisional and dese rving of improvement. The following issues are therefore discussed: 1. the editorial history of the text (with a new analysis of the hypothesis of a double version of the text provided by the author); 2. The stemmatical relationship among the Latin manuscr ipts; 3. The manuscript tradition of the volgarizzamenti; 4. An analysis of the oldest witness, Rome, BNC, Vittorio Emanuele 1167 (with some observations about the milieu of production in the context of the vernacular translation of Franciscan sources at the end of the fourteenth century in Tuscany).
