Marshal of Count Thibaut III

View through CrossRef
This chapter considers Geoffroy of Villehardouin as an invaluable, trusted mentor to eighteen-year-old Thibaut, whom he had known since birth. Geoffrey played a key but discreet role in the six-month transition between Countess Marie's last appearance in October 1197 and Thibaut's homage to the king in April 1198. The chapter notes that Geoffroy was among the eleven important men who accompanied Thibaut to Melun in April 1198 to do liege homage to the king. Five months after Count Thibaut's succession, the new pope, Innocent III issued his encyclical Post miserabile that called for a new crusade to recover Jerusalem. The chapter cites indirect evidence that suggests that Geoffroy, as Count Thibaut's closest adviser, had a hand in developing Count Thibaut's new policies regarding castle lordships within the county.
