This chapter details Count Baldwin's coronation, implying that his first order of business was to reward Boniface of Montferrat with the fief promised to the land across the straits on the Turkish side and the island of Crete. It covers Boniface's request to exchange the land across the straits for the kingdom of Thessalonika in order to be closer to the ancestral lands of his new wife. Baldwin's letter to the pope recounted the events that led to his election as emperor of Constantinople and justified the violence done to the city and its people. The chapter explores the task of the conquerors and the papacy of ruling the Byzantine lands and Greek-speaking Eastern Christians. In recalling the transitional month of May 1204, Geoffroy of Villehardouin failed to reflect on the significance of the conquest, the election of a Latin emperor, and the imminent dismantling of a Christian empire.
