Otitis Media with Effusion and Adenoid Hypertrophy

View through CrossRef
Background: The infection or inflammation of middle ear due microorganisms labeled as otitis media, usually it is located just posterior to the eardrum. So, to determine the frequency of otitis media with effusion (OME) in patients with adenoid hypertrophy.  Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at department of Otorhinolaryngology, Bakhtawar Amin Hospital, Multan, from November 2023 to October 2024. All patients underwent tympanometry using a 226 Hz probe tone. An ear canal volume of 0.3 to 1 mL was considered normal. Main variables of study were duration of OSM, frequency if DNS, nasal polyps, bottle feeding and monthly income of family. Results: Mean age of 6.57 ± 1.91 years, 57.27% were male and 42.73% were female, resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 1.3:1. The frequency of otitis media with effusion in patients with adenoid hypertrophy was observed in 32.73% of the participants. Conclusion: Frequency of OME in patients with adenoid hypertrophy is quite high. So, we recommend that OME should be taken into consideration in children with adenoid hypertrophy in order to improve the hearing in these particular patients.
