Abstract
Nephew of Napoléon Bonaparte, Charles‐Louis‐Napoléon Bonaparte, better known as Napoleon III, became president of the Second Republic in 1848, and subsequently emperor of the Second Empire in 1852. He created a sustainable empire from Africa to Asia, maintained a close alliance with Britain, and reasserted French power across the globe.
