Anglo‐Dutch Wars (1652–1654, 1665–1667, 1672–1674, 1780–1784)

AbstractThe Anglo‐Dutch Wars sprang from commercial and maritime conflict. Using its superior navy, England challenged Dutch primacy in world trade, which it had acquired since the 1590s. The ability of the Dutch Republic to neutralize England's capacity to damage its shipping and trade was a precondition to the survival of the Dutch global trading network (Israel 1992: 210). These were the dynamics that dominated the first three Anglo‐Dutch Wars. The Fourth Anglo‐Dutch War stands apart as it took place more than a century after, when the Dutch Republic was past its prime, but still possessed the third largest merchant fleet in the world.
