Tyros

View through Europeana Collections
The coin belongs to a group of coins under Elagabalus, which no longer bear the title of Colonia. This is interpreted as meaning that the city had lost the title under Elagabalus (possibly due to the support of the Macrinus) and only regained under Severus Alexander. Front: Armoured bust of the Elagabalus with laurel wreath in the back view after r. Rear: Six-laced temple front, inside it a cult of the Astarte framed by Tropaion and column base on which a Nike stands and the goddess beaches. Purple snails and other objects in front of the temple (details hardly visible). (coin cabinet)
