Caesar as Pontifex Maximus

View through CrossRef
Abstract This paper discusses of Caesar’s tenure of the priesthood of pontifex maximus and its place in the development of his political career. The circumstances that led to his election to that important office receive close consideration, as well as the evidence for Caesar’s fulfilment of his priestly duties. Some general remarks are offered on the role of public priesthoods in the Roman Republic, on the significance of the highest pontificate, and on the interaction between the religious and political domains. A comparison is developed between Caesar’s use of his priesthood and the precedent set by Sulla in the same domain.
