Nelson, Horatio, 1st Viscount Nelson (1758–1805)

AbstractOn September 29, 1758 Horace, later Horatio, Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe, England. He was the sixth of eleven children, the son of Reverend Edmund Nelson and his wife Catherine. At the age of 12 Horace prevailed upon his father to gain him an appointment as a midshipman in the Royal Navy serving under his uncle Captain Maurice Suckling aboard theRaisonable(64 guns) in 1771. Captain Suckling detached Nelson for service on a merchant trader to the West Indies to develop his seamanship. Nelson thrived under Suckling's program, learning seamanship from the deck plates to the foretop.
