EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NATIONAL MATHEMATICS PROGRAM IN IMPROVING THE PROFICIENCY OF LEARNERS IN MATHEMATICS
View through CrossRef
The main purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of the National Mathematics Program (NMP) in improving the proficiency of grade 6 learners of Ampusongan Elementary School in Bakun, Benguet. It focused on determining the proficiency level of grade 6 learners in mathematics in the pre- and post-tests before and after the conduct of the National Mathematics Program. Significant differences in their proficiency when grouped according to their parents’ occupation, as well as the difference between their proficiency in the pre- and post-tests, were also determined.
The study made use of a pre-experimental research design, using the Text-Based Shield of the CAR Learning Management System as the main tool in gathering data. There were twenty-eight (n=28) grade 6 learners who were identified as participants of the study. F-test and t-test were used to determine the differences in the proficiency of learners according to their parents’ occupation and their proficiency in the pre- and post-tests, respectively. The study was conducted in Ampusongan Elementary School for the school year 2024-2025.
Findings revealed that grade 6 learners were low in their proficiency in mathematics as reflected in the pre-test before the conduct of the National Mathematics Program. However, they were able to attain a nearly proficient level in the post-test after the conduct of the National Mathematics Program. Their parents' occupation did not affect their proficiency in both the pre- and post-tests; nevertheless, a significant difference was established between the proficiency level of learners in the pre- and post-tests in mathematics before and after the conduct of the National Mathematics Program.
Based on the findings, it is concluded that the low proficiency of learners in the pre-test indicates that the foundational mathematical skills developed in earlier grade levels may not have been fully mastered. Though the significant improvement in math scores implies that the structured activities, instructional methods, materials, interventions, and learning strategies embedded during the conduct of the National Mathematics Program were effective in addressing learning gaps and enhancing students' foundational mathematical skills. Although the students showed significant improvement, the post-test score average still falls short of the "Proficient" range. This indicates that there is still room for further growth and improvement in math skills.
