Indo‐Scythian (Saka) Kingdom

Abstract Numismatic evidence forms the most important source for the reconstruction of the history of the Indo‐Scythian kingdom, created in the 1st century bce following the arrival of migrating Scythians or Sakas from Central Asia. Its kings followed a system of joint rule and the accepted numismatic sequence for them (following G. K. Jenkins) is Vonones/Spalahores, Vonones/Spalagadames, Spalyrises/Spalagadames, Spalirises, Spalirises/Azes I, Azes I, Azilises, and Azes II. Their kingdom extended from Arachosia (Afghanistan) to the region to the east of Jhelum, including Gandhara and Taxila, across the northwest and north‐central Indian subcontinent. Mathura for a brief period was within their control. The era beginning in 57/58 bce was named after its most illustrious ruler, Azes I. They were supplanted by the Indo‐Parthians.
