Albert Patterson, Phenix City, and the Rise of John Patterson
View through CrossRef
Abstract
An unexpected but essential contribution to NAACP v. Alabama resulted from the assassination of Albert Patterson, the winning candidate for the 1954 Democratic nomination for attorney general. His murder catapulted his young, inexperienced son John into the race, and he used his father’s reputation as a crime fighter in Phenix City and his martyrdom to win election. In office, Patterson soon eyed the 1958 gubernatorial race. Though he later claimed to have been initially unaware of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the race issue, he recognized the power and popularity of segregation and exploited it politically, as he developed his reputation as an opponent of the civil rights movement. The state’s attack on the NAACP fit Patterson’s new political needs.
