Epilogue

This chapter examines the causes and effects of the breakdown of the Finnish studio system during the 1950s and the 1960s. The actual structural crisis is usually dated to the late 1950s, with a more specific turning point in 1957–8, when the majors started laying off their staff and reducing their feature film production. Discussions about the crisis of domestic films had, however, been going on for nearly a decade. The chapter closes with a discussion of the influence the studio production mode has had on current Finnish cinema.
