Finnish studio era was dominated by three major production companies, Suomi-Filmi, Suomen Filmiteollisuus and Fennada-Filmi. In terms of feature films, their share was almost 70 per cent of the whole output of films between 1920 and 1963. Two of the majors, Suomi-Filmi and Fennada-Filmi were fully integrated, while Suomen Filmiteollisuus concentrated mainly on production, which made it more vulnerable than its rivals during the production crises of the late 1950s. This chapter outlines the history and the basic modes of operation of the three majors.
