La carrera militar de John Miller Adye y la administración británica de Gibraltar(1883-1886). Un trabajo biográfico.
View through CrossRef
In the 19th century, following the Napoleonic Wars, Gibraltar became a key strategic point for the British Empire's Mediterranean policy, and in 1830 it was formally declared a Crown Colony. Governed by a representative of the monarchy with broad executive and legislative powers, Gibraltar experienced significant social, economic, and urban development, driven by British prosperity and Spain's weakening position. This study aims to reconstruct the biography of Governor John Miller Adye (1819-1900) and his administration between 1883 and 1886, to analyze the changes in the colony during a period of Gibraltar's administrative history that has been scarcely studied. Examining his career allows for a better understanding of the British colonial system at the height of the Empire and how it influenced diplomatic relations between Britain and Spain concerning Gibraltar during the early years of the Bourbon Restoration.
