Abstract
This is a transcript of a May 14, 2025, conversation contextualizing the Gaza genocide as rooted in the longer history of the Nakba and the ongoing Nakba, a decades-long process of depopulation, domination, and denial of Palestinian grievances, rights, and aspirations. In advance of a special issue titled “From Nakba to Genocide,” guest editors Professors Maha Nassar and Raz Segal led a discussion with key people who have documented and written extensively about the Gaza genocide and its deeper context. Among the many themes and threads in this conversation, the interlocutors brought up the continuity between Nakba and the Gaza genocide, what led them to identify the assault on Gaza after the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, as genocidal, media framing and erasure of Palestinians, and how the Gaza genocide tests international law and accountability. This transcript of Nassar’s and Raz’s conversation with Francesca Albanese, Shourideh Molavi, Lee Mordechai, and Raji Sourani was slightly edited for clarity and length and to provide further citations.
