Abstract
Special ceremony marking Ellington’s seventieth birthday was held at the White House on 29 April 1969. Many musicians and dignitaries attended, and Ellington later described the event with delight, recalling how President Nixon had played“Happy Birthday” and Willie “The Lion” Smith had performed wearing his trademark derby.’ Two days earlier, the distinguished writer Ralph Ellison had offered the following tribute to Ellington in the Washington Star. Interweaving personal reflections with a probing analysis.
