Communication in surgical oncology

Surgical oncology provides a number of challenges in communication. Having basic frameworks for initial consultation, pre-operative counselling, and post-operative communication can be invaluable. Putting a diagnosis of cancer and treatment options into context, in terms the patient can understand is essential for informed consent; ensuring that written communication is accurate and comprehensive is equally important. Ensuring that all members of the team know what the patient is aware of will also reduce the risk of misunderstandings later. Communication in surgical oncology can be extremely challenging, but also extremely rewarding. It will not always be possible to be perfect, especially in complicated situations. Two basic principles will help here, as in most encounters: be honest and be kind.
