Fragments of a Porn Star: Hybrid Documentary and Avant-garde Impulses in Shauna: Every Man’s Fantasy

The hardcore pseudo-documentary Shauna: Every Man’s Fantasy (1985) is often seen as Roberta Findlay’s least ethical film, a crass exploitation of the suicide of budding porn star Colleen Applegate (who used the screen name Shauna Grant) the year before. Rather than attempting a redemptive reading or apologetics, this chapter explores the layers of Findlay’s amoral film, finding in it surprising resonances with not only Findlay’s own earlier work but also feminist and avant-garde cinema.
