Vandaag de dag is Estella Hertzveld zo goed als vergeten en alleen nog bekend bij een kleine groep liefhebbers van negentiende-eeuwse literatuur vanwege haar oorspronkelijke dichtwerk, bijeengebracht in Gedichten (1881). Nog onbekender is haar vertaaloeuvre, dat vooral poëzie van Engelse, Noorse, Duitse en Amerikaanse schrijvers omvat. Hoewel het maar om zeven publicaties gaat, zijn ze van grote cultuurhistorische waarde. Ze werpen namelijk licht op de negentiende-eeuwse Joodse lees- en schrijfcultuur in Europa en de rol van vrouwen daarin. Haar grote voorbeeld was de Engelse schrijfster Grace Aguilar (1816-1847), die verhalen, gedichten en bespiegelingen over het Joodse geloof publiceerde. Van enkele literaire auteurs vervaardigde zij vertalingen samen haar zus Maria Hertzveld (1839-1909), die dan het proza voor haar rekening nam. Daarnaast vertaalden zij samen teksten op het gebied van de jodenemancipatie.
