Self‐Fulfilling Prophecy

The self‐fulfilling prophecy is the process by which one's expectations of other persons or groups lead those persons or groups to behave in ways that confirm those expectations. An influential and controversial idea in education, the concept of the self‐fulfilling prophecy is used to illuminate the ways that teacher expectations influence students’ behavioral and achievement outcomes. The self‐fulfilling prophecy predicts that positive teacher expectations lead to positive student outcomes, while negative expectations lead to negative student outcomes.
