View of Amber fort from the valley, negative no. 182
View through Harvard Museums
This horizontal format albumen silver print depicts a view of the walls and ramparts of the late 16th century Amber Fort from the opposite hillside. The fort itself lies on a terrace that rests about two thirds distance from the bottom of the composition. The hill continues to the upper left, revealing a series of protective walls at the summit. To the lower right, the hillside beneath the fort disappears into dense, brushy foliage the obscures the pool and gardens at the base of the fort. The roof of a small building is visible in the foreground at the bottom center of the image. Sunlight reflects against the light stone of the fort walls, creating a contrast between the medium tones of the earthy hillside and the dark foliage below.
