What is authoritarianism?
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This chapter examines the meaning of authoritarianism and how this has evolved over time. It begins by discussing the influential work of Juan J. Linz, the “father of authoritarianism.” While acknowledging Linz’s many contributions, the chapter shows that the term is defined differently today: authoritarianism is now used as a broad umbrella category for all non-democratic regimes. The chapter concludes by discussing how to spot an authoritarian regime, arguing that if a regime does not hold free and fair elections, have universal adult suffrage, or provide protection for a broad array of civil liberties, it is authoritarian.
