In the Johnson collection, Gustav Lundberg is represented with an official portrait depicting the Major-General, etc. Grefve Albrekt von Lantinghausen (17511820), which is executed in the spirit of rocoon.
Clothed in a marsh consisting of a precious costume of velvet, with lace and rosettes, and with the words of harness and serafimer, the Major-General speaks of us that he belongs to the yppersta upper class and the circle around the court. The portrait describes through facial expressions, posture and empowerment with all desirable clarity that this is a man of status, wealth and power. He glances from the wall down on us with a mine of complacency - while being frayed by his honest expression in his eyes. Who was he?
In encyclopedias we find information about the official life of Albrecht von Lantinghausen. His life drawing shows an impressive military track record. What is interesting is that he twice requested his dismissal from the military. The first time, in 1789, he called for his dismissal on the occasion of Gustav III’s violent actions against Lantinghausen’s uncle, Fredrik Axel von Fersen d ä, who was in custody after opposing the king. Lantinghausen returned to service under Gustav IV Adolf but again called for his dismissal when the king loaded him for the unfortunate outcome of a battle against the Russians during the Finnish War in 1808. That he had not had enough ammunition and that he skillfully led the return train and the embarkation, the king took no note of. Incidentally, the art was closest to Count Lantinghausen. He was a landscape painter, a good etcher and one of the first Swedes to work with lithography. For his artistic merits, he was elected an honorary member of the Swedish Academy of Painters. Albrecht von Lantinghausen was described by his contemporaries as “a rescue of a rather actionable character and with a goal-life excessively serious nun.”
Gustav Lundberg has managed to capture Lantinghausen’s person, with his honest eyes, who is consistent with the contemporary description, even though he is not usually attributed to the ability to reproduce the character and soul life of a person.
