Neandertal, type locality and specimen

View through CrossRef
The type specimen for Neandertals comprises a calotte (top of the skull) and 15 postcranial bones recovered from the Neander Valley (Neanderthal, now Neandertal), Germany in 1856. The specimen is often referred to as Neandertal 1. The actual site was destroyed soon after the specimen's recovery, but some deposits thrown from the cave were located and excavated in 1997 and 2000. These new excavations yielded Pleistocene fauna, Paleolithic artifacts, and 73 Neandertal skeletal fragments. Three fragments were direct‐dated by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C to ca. 40 kya, establishing conclusively the antiquity of the first Neandertal to be recognized.
