This passage consists of three thirteen-measure periods, each divided into four small sections with a duration of thirteen quarter notes. Each of these smaller thirteen-beat sections uses a consistent rotation of three contrasting types of material. These three types of material give an initial impression of maximum distinctiveness and contrast, but as the piece progresses, subtle affinities are emphasized and the musical materials show a surprising ability to morph into each other.
