SPECIFIC TRAITS OF VERB MORPHOLOGY IN THE NORTHERN DIALECTS OF THE UDMURT LANGUAGE

View through CrossRef
The article detects and defines the specific traits of verb grammar system in the Northern dialects of the Udmurt language, which have insufficient coverage in scientific literature. The paper highlights distinctive features of the Northern Udmurt dialects on the one hand and features with limited diffusion in certain microsystems of studied dialects on the other. Language data are analyzed and interpreted in the context of the Udmurt dialect landscape. The study demonstrates that in the dialects under consideration the morphological system of the verb in its substantial and structural characteristics largely coincides with the system of the Udmurt literary language. Dialectal peculiarities in derivation, paradigms of conjugation, distribution and use of separate verb forms are revealed. Distinctive features of the morphological character are observed in terms of the expression of the infinitive, of individual forms of the present tense, which is due to the phonetic laws existing in the Northern dialects. Certain intradialect differences are revealed in the forms of inflection of some verb categories (in particular, paradigms of conjugation of conditional and desired moods, perfect, varying in the Northern dialects).
