The Theology of Carolingian Historians

View through CrossRef
Abstract Part III takes a step back from the detail examined in Part II and asks what Carolingian historians tended to share in their language about God’s agency. Chapter 7 seeks to establish the theology of Carolingian historians from such shared literary choices. It looks at four aspects of their writing about God: their vocabulary, their grammar, the interaction of their characters with God, and the plot structures in which God acts. From these, a remarkable coherence to their theology becomes apparent, which stressed the contingency of human agency upon God. The chapter concludes with Carolingian historians’ use of Scripture and their ambivalence about typology, in contrast to their precision about the detail of divine operations within their narratives.
