Diagnosing onychomycosis with dermoscopy and the strategy of early intervention

View through CrossRef
High prevalence of onychomycosis in developed countries is well-acknowledged. Less understanding one may find regarding clinical variability of the disease and the penetration of newer, effective diagnostic techniques to everyday derma- tology practice. Advent of dermoscopy as a diagnostic toolfor common skin and nail pathology may help diagnosing and differentiating onychomycosis in its early stages. Clinical experience gained by Russian dermatologists allows for describing major dermoscopic features of onychomycosis and devising a routine for its early diagnosis and treatment. Rational strategy of early intervention for onychomycosis embraces the population awareness, timely screening and administration of modern specialized forms of antifungals, such as amorolfine 5% lacquer.
