Cinematic Revolutions Oppression and Resistance in Bush Mama and Sambizanga

View through CrossRef
This paper examines how cinema contributes to social change through the films Bush Mama (1979) by Haile Gerima and Sambizanga (1972) by Sarah Maldoror. Although they take place in very different settings, one in Los Angeles and the other in Angola, both works focus on systemic oppression and the strength of marginalized communities. Women are central to the stories, with Dorothy in Bush Mama and Maria in Sambizanga becoming leaders of resistance and transformation. The paper discusses themes of poverty, racial and colonial violence, and state repression, while also showing how family, community, and political solidarity become sources of strength. Key scenes, such as Dorothy’s final rejection of imposed identities and Domingos’s endurance under torture, demonstrate how personal struggles connect with broader political movements. By studying these films within the context of “Film and Social Change,” the paper shows how cinema exposes injustice, encourages collective action, and supports ongoing struggles for liberation.
