Tudur Aled is the most significant Welsh poet of the early Tudor period. The standard edition of his works contains 169 poems. He was chiefly a praise poet. Most of his work relates to North Wales, and especially northeast Wales, but he also served Sir Rhys ap Thomas in the south. Some of his patrons were abbots of Cistercian monasteries. He also composed a poem for St. Winefride (Gwenfrewy) of Holywell. In 1523 he won a silver chair at the Eisteddfod of Caerwys. He died around 1525 in Carmarthen and was buried in the church of the Franciscan friars there; he had taken the Franciscan habit before death. Nine elegies were composed in his honor.
