Juive et Espagnole;Le Moniteur de la Mode

View through Europeana Collections
Jules David. 'Juive et Espagnole'. Two fancy dress costumes by Babin, Paris. Hand-coloured fashion engraving from Le Moniteur de la Mode, Paris, published in London. c.1850. Hand-coloured engraving showing two women in fancy dresses called 'Juive' and 'Espagnole' (Jewish and Spanish). On the left, the Juive costume (which appears to combine Turkish and Caucasian dress elements) comprises a light lilac tunic with darker facings to the turned-back sleeves, over a wide-sleeved white blouse and a yellow striped skirt, under which are worn rose-coloured bloomers, very full and caught in at the ankle, with turned-up toe slippers. Dark red sash, matching the head-wrap, and a flowing white veil worn on top. On the right, the Spanish costume is a dark mustard-coloured bodice with low neckline and white puffed fabric details on the sleeves, and a black ankle-length skirt, both trimmed with deep bands of black netted fringe, and a gold cap trimmed with a large black fringed cockade. Both women hold masquerade masks.
