This chapter focuses on Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Jacob Vernes on February 18, 1758. Jean Le Rond D'Alembert's article “Geneva” in the Encyclopedia had stated that the Genevan clergy were no longer really Calvinists. The clergy debated making a response to this charge. In his letter to Vernes, Rousseau claims that he believes in God and he thinks that that is everything that is essential and useful in religion. He also rejects the notion that the eternity of punishments can be accorded with man's weakness or with God's justice. Rousseau then admits that he does not care about what will happen to the souls of the wicked at their death.
