Women were banned from competing and even watching events in the ancient Olympics, and were excluded from the first modern Olympic Games. However, with changes in society, participation in sport at all levels has dramatically changed. This has heightened awareness of several important clinical issues relating to women and sport and exercise. In particular, exercise can have positive or deleterious effects on bone health, females are at greater risk of some musculoskeletal injuries, and there is a common need for guidance on exercise in pregnancy and at the menopause....
