Factors Associated with Suicide Attempts among Adolescents: A Review of the National Literature

View through CrossRef
Introduction: Suicide among adolescents in Brazil has drawn attention due to the prevalence of the behavior among very young individuals. However, it is still little addressed in society, being little discussed in the school and family environment, which hinders screening strategies for suicide risk and its prevention. Objective: The main objective of this review is to analyze the scientific production on suicide attempts and deaths by suicide among adolescents in Brazil between the years 2011 and 2020. Results and Discussion: It was possible to identify a greater production of cross-sectional articles, in journals of collective/public health and psychiatry or/ and psychology. Of the factors most associated with suicide and suicide attempts, we obtained the use of drugs, presence of other mental disorders, alcohol use, low economic status, dysfunctional relationship with parents, sexual and physical violence. Conclusions: For the interventions, it is clear that there is a need for detection strategies, welcoming and prevention of suicide, programs and financial resources to reduce its indicators, health actions to combat suicide and future studies on the subject. Keywords: Suicide, Suicide Attempt, Adolescents, Brazil.
