Probiotics and their applications: an insight on studies performed in Cameroon

Nowadays, there is a rise in the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases and the phenomena of multiple antibiotics resistance in humans and animals. For these reasons, consumers’ interest towards natural products for the management of health issues has increased worldwide. The sector of probiotics which stands as a safe and efficient example of these natural products is currently of growing interest. Indeed, probiotics are microorganisms with demonstrated safety issues for which consumption is associated to positive effects on the host’s health. There are several studies dealing with probiotics in the literature. In this study, the focus was made on the state of art of research on probiotics in Cameroon. This review paper brings deep insights on the studies on probiotics performed in Cameroon. It highlights the reported sources of probiotics, and the different methods used for the isolation and identification of these health benefits microorganisms. It also provides information on the different techniques used for the functional characterization of the probiotic properties of the strains. Finally, it also highlights the different fields where the applications of probiotics were reported.
