Thomson’s Thought and Work in Context

View through CrossRef
The chapter introduces Thomson’s thought and work in context. It provides a summary of the history of Gaelic in Scotland and of Scottish nationalism, and comments on the intersections between the Gaelic revival and the national movement. Drawing on publications such as the ‘The Role of the Writer in a Minority Culture’ (1966) and Why Gaelic Matters (1984), the chapter examines Thomson’s conceptualisation of the Gaelic revival. Editor and activist Ruaraidh Erskine of Mar (1896–1960) and poet C. M. Grieve (Hugh MacDiarmid, 1892–1978) are discussed as major figures who influenced Thomson’s outlook and activities. The chapter concludes with an assessment of Thomson’s lifelong interest in Ireland.
