Erotic art includes any artistic work that is intended by the artist and perceived by the observer to elicit arousal. Defining erotic art is difficult because of its subjective nature. Controversy over the difference between definitions of erotic art and of pornography persists Regardless of definition, erotic art is a representation of humanity and lifestyle. It has been a part of every civilization dating back to the Paleolithic era. While the concept and presence of erotic art has not changed, societies’ reactions to it over time has. Erotic artists have been imprisoned, works have been lost, destroyed, or locked away from public view. Today, there are many different genres of erotic art and the issue of what is considered pornography and what is considered erotic art, is still not clear.
