Porträt Charles Mordaunt, 3. Graf von Peterborough (1658-1735)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Charles Mordaunt. The British statesman is shown here as a half-figure facing left in the three-quarter profile. His gaze rests on the viewer He wears a long wig, an elaborate coat from which a jabot lies, and a sash above it, under which the chest star of the courtyard order is recognizable. With his right arm, he seems to point it easily. The effigy is surrounded by an octagonal frame.
Charles Mordaunt took a military career after studying in Oxford. He fought against the pirates in the Mediterranean under Admiral Sir John Narborough. This brought him some high offices in London and he acquired the favor of the king, which he accompanied to the Netherlands in 1691. In 1697 he was killed by his uncle Earl of Peterborough. Under Queen Anne he conducted some successful war expeditions that made him popular with the English people. In 1722 he secretly married Anastasia Robinson (1698-1755), a singer Georg Friedrich Händels.
On this sheet two techniques seem to have been applied: the fineness on the head and hand of the depicted indicate a steel engraving. The granularity in parts of its conversion, on the other hand, indicates a lithography with chalk. About 1706 or 1708 Michael Dahl painted a painting of the depicted that will have served as a template for the engraving.
